A Brief Guide about the Cambridge Primary Mathematics Syllabus

Developing an enthusiasm for math; a subject dreaded by many kids, is close to impossible for many students. But through Cambridge Primary Mathematics, kids can discover unique and effective ways to improve their analytical and rational thinking.

Cambridge Primary Mathematics is a syllabus designed for primary students aged 5 to 11 years old. Here’s a brief guide to help you understand more about this program:

The goals

The syllabus is designed to improve the students’ holistic understanding of maths with the goal of making them competent and fluent in computation. It lays heavy emphasis on essential mathematical principles, systems, functions, and relationships. The goal of this syllabus is not only for students to remember formulas and procedures, but to learn how to apply, analyse and evaluate mathematically, thereby enhancing higher order thinking skills.

Thinking and working mathematically

One of the things that set the Cambridge Primary Mathematics syllabus apart is the feature called ‘Thinking and working mathematically’ or TWM. This feature is also used in Cambridge Lower Secondary Mathematics. How does it work in a real classroom setup? Teachers facilitate classroom discussions and encourage students to actually talk about the math problems and exchange ideas on how to solve them with one another. They are to challenge ideas and provide proof that validates their solutions!

This exercise helps them think and work mathematically, making it easier to make sense of the concepts, build connection between facts, and identify procedures.

Three strands

The subject is divided into three strands: number, geometry and measure, statistics and probability. The strands help teachers in showing students the connections between mathematical concepts and improve their numerical fluency.

Cambridge’s Mathematics syllabus is certainly not the only thing that makes the Cambridge Primary schools popular. The truth is that the comprehensive and rigorous curriculum for primary students is also the reason why many students and parents aspire to get into Cambridge schools.
